Alternative Route to Postsecondary Education

Graduating from secondary school can be exciting yet filled with many uncertainties. If you are a current upper secondary school student, it may be time for you to think about life after secondary school education. There are many options for postsecondary education – Junior Colleges, Polytechnics or even private education institutions.

Students may choose to study in Junior Colleges for their postsecondary education when they are still unsure about the career path they want to take in the future, but if you already have an idea of what your aspirations are, then a diploma course may be a better fit.

A-Level VS Diploma

A-level syllabus in Junior Colleges provides students with higher levels of general education. It serves as an extension of secondary school studies, whereby students continue to extend their knowledge mainly in the general fields of Mathematics, Sciences and Linguistics. The A-level syllabus also includes business-related studies like Economics, Principles of Accounting, as well as Management of Business.

Diploma courses are offered by Polytechnics and private education institutions like DIMENSIONS International College. There is a wide variety of diploma courses that caters specialised education programmes according to students’ choices of studies. These courses equip students with the skills and knowledge to be able to perform in their respective fields of work upon graduation. DIMENSIONS International College, for instance, offers different private diploma programmes ranging from Retail Management to Professional Cookery. For students who are unable to commit to full-time diploma studies, Polytechnics and private institutions offer part-time courses to meet the needs of these students. DIMENSIONS International College, too, offers both full-time and part-time diploma courses depending on students’ needs.

Private Diploma

One may ask, “Why choose private diploma when you can take diplomas in Polytechnics?” Indeed, when one thinks about getting a diploma, the first place that comes to mind would be “Polytechnics”. Standard diploma courses offered in Polytechnics take three years for students to complete. Private diploma programmes, on the other hand, are often shorter routes to being a diploma graduate. The course duration for private diplomas is often shorter as compared to Polytechnic diploma courses. For instance, the Diploma in Business offered by DIMENSIONS International College has a course duration of between 8 to 16 months.  For individuals who wish to step into the work force earlier, private diplomas may be a good choice for you.

Another reason as to why students may choose to invest in private diploma programmes may be due to the unavailability of certain diploma courses in local Polytechnics. The Diploma in Hospitality Management offered in DIMENSIONS International College, for example, is not offered in any of the local Polytechnics. Therefore, studying in private institutions serves as a good solution for individuals looking to get a diploma which is unavailable in local Polytechnics.
