In recent times, there has been an increase in the number of foreigners
like you and me, as well as many other fellow and prospective students of
DIMENSIONS International College, who are looking to seek employment in Singapore.
Being well-known for our multi-racial and cultural society, Singapore can be seen
as one of the better choices in Asia when it comes to working abroad. With 4
main ethnic groups and 4 official languages, we embrace and promote diversity in
our communities. However, to work in Singapore, it is particularly important
for individuals to have a certain level of command in English.
Why English?
Living in a multi-racial society would mean that a standardised language
is needed to break down the language barriers and to ensure that people are
able to communicate effectively with one another. Imagine Singapore without a
standardised language: a Chinese lady would not be able to effectively
communicate to the Malay owner of a Malay food stall. During the times as a British
colony, the English language has been introduced to Singapore as the
administrative language of the colonial government, which is then kept by the
Singapore government as the official working language after independence.
Therefore, the English language serves as a bridge to narrow the gap between
the different ethnic groups.
Furthermore, Singapore is also home to business organisations from many
different countries all over the world. As one of the world’s best business hub[1], we often use
English to carry out most job activities as well as business communications in the workplace. Therefore,
if you are a foreigner or if your foreign friends seeking employment in
Singapore are struggling with their English language, this post may perhaps
give you some insights on the English courses available in Singapore.
Language Centres
There is an abundance of language schools in Singapore offering a
variety of language courses. From English to French, or even Burmese – you name
it, they have it. Language courses in these centres often come in 10-session
courses, where students will obtain a Certificate of Attendance or Certificate
of Completion at the end of the course. Courses in language schools are usually
available on weekends, therefore serving as a convenient option for individuals
with packed weekday work schedules.
Private Institutions/Universities
Individuals hoping to study in an actual campus or school environment
can opt for courses provided by private institutions or universities such as
DIMENSIONS International College. Courses offered by private institutions are
often available in both full-time and part-time, offering flexibility for
working individuals who wish to improve on their English language competency. These
courses often have longer duration periods as compared to those offered by
language centres.
English Courses @ DIMENSIONS International College
DIMENSIONS International College offers English courses at different
stages, depending on the students’ level of competency in the language. The
English courses offered range from level 1 to 6, from beginner to
advanced level. They are available as both full-time and part-time studies,
with a longer course duration for part-time studies. Placement tests will be
provided to students by DIMENSIONS International College to ensure that
students are placed in the right stage of the course according to their English
standards.
At DIMENSIONS International College, we have native English-speaking
lecturers to conduct some of our English classes. There will also be
opportunities for class interactions to encourage students to practise speaking
and to also gain more exposure to the use of the language.
DIMENSIONS International College also organises out-of-class activities
regularly to provide students with a platform to showcase their skills and
talents in the English language. This helps students to boost their confidence
when using the language, and also serves as opportunities for students from the
different schools in DIMENSIONS International College to come together and
interact with one another. For more information, please visit our official
