All You Need to Know about SkillsFuture

Not sure which career path to take in the future? Wondering if your current job is the right choice for you? Hoping to upgrade your skills to stay relevant?  If you are a Singapore Citizen and your answer is yes for any of the above questions, then this article is dedicated to you. Here, we will talk about SkillsFuture, a programme that may serve as a solution to any aforementioned worries you may be facing.

What is SkillsFuture?

Launched in September 2014, SkillsFuture is a Singapore national movement that aims to help develop citizens to their fullest potential in life, education as well as in their career. Regardless of your starting point, SkillsFuture offers a variety of resources to assist you to maximise your potential for a better future.

Students

If you are a student who is uncertain about which course of study or career path to take, Education and Career Guidance (ECG) Counsellors from the Ministry of Education (MOE) are available under the SkillsFuture movement to provide you with relevant information to help you make more well-informed choices and decisions.

Under the SkillsFuture movement, local Polytechnics and ITE Colleges are enhancing their internship programmes to allow students to have a deeper and more structured learning experience throughout the duration of their attachments. Students who are interested in overseas internships can also apply for SkillsFuture’s Young Talent Programme if they are studying in one of the participating institutions. Under this programme, students will be awarded funding for their participation in the overseas attachments, where they will be able to benefit from the international exposure and working experience.

Early/Mid-Career

Through SkillsFuture’s ECG system, new workforce entrants can get career coaching and training advisory services at career centres to help them make better career decisions. There is also P-Max Programme, an initiative that helps match SMEs with early-career job-seeking professionals to aid in better job recruitment, management as well as retention.

From January 2016, all Singaporeans aged 25 and above will be given $500 SkillsFuture credit which can be used to pay for skills-related courses supported by public agencies. These credits will be topped-up by the Government periodically to allow individuals in their early and mid-career who wish to future develop and deepen their skills to take on their respective courses of interest at any participating institution such as DIMENSIONS International College. Individuals taking on upgrading programmes can even apply for SkillsFuture Study Awards, where you may be awarded a sum of $5000 for advancing your skills. More information about the SkillsFuture movement can be found on www.skillsfuture.sg.
